Mandatory Reading If You Want To Be A Truck Driver!
I haven't driven an 18 wheeler but have driven across country a few time and have driven through New York City in a 16 foot box truck. The GWB is still the worst place to drive a truck of any size. I have total respect for all truck drivers.
I truly enjoyed reading about "Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker...and his cat". This reminds me of the first weigh station I visited in Maryland. The light was red and I stopped on the scale. It never turned green and the sign clearly said "Move off the scales when the green light is on". So I waited. The uniformed man in the building finally exited, walked to the front of my truck and pointed toward the other green light about fifty feet away, then motioned for me to move on. There must have been ten trucks behind me at that point. From then on, I never stopped for more than 10 seconds.
Spirit of the Road takes you into the mind of Rick, a newbie trucker, and shares his experiences and learning curve while driving trucks all around the United States. His journal-style accounts take you through all the emotions - laugh out loud funny, spitting mad, and tears of sadness. He talks about everything, like his not so favorite 45 degree backing maneuvers and blindside docking. Or realizing he made a wrong turn leading to nowhere a little too late. There is also some history on some of the cities and towns he visits making this year long adventure well worth the read.
Though very entertaining, it is also quite educational. If you were ever thinking about becoming a truck driver, Spirit of the Road: The Life of an American Trucker...and his cat.
